Joan Metcalf Schaefer came to the University of Southern California in 1955 from her position a Dean of Women at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, she graduated from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio with membership in Phi Kappa Phi, Mortar Board, Mu Phi Epsilon, Phi Beta Kappa, and holding such positions as President of the Associated Women Students, member of Panhellenic Council and active in the Residence Hall life on campus.
She majored in Music and English and participated in all of the musical organizations and productions in her undergraduate days. Following graduation, she was a music supervisor in Ohio schools prior to beginning her work in the student personnel field. |
